College History

1950s

Bernard Mizeki Schools Trust

Bernard Mizeki Schools Trust was founded in 1959 by the then Bishop of Mashonaland Cecil William Alderson and Canon Robert Grinham.

They secured funds to the tune of fourty thousand British pounds from the Lambeth Conference and invited a group of prominent individuals, both African and European, with the goal of providing high-quality education to African students through establishing Bernard Mizeki College.

1960s

Construction of the College

Actual construction of the college began in 1960 with the arrival of founding headmaster Peter Holmes Canham and opened in January 1961.

The school's name is a tribute to Bernard Mizeki, an African catechist who was martyred in Zimbabwe in 1896. Bernard Mizeki College was modeled after Eton College in the United Kingdom and other private European schools.

The college was founded on land that had previously been used by the Church of England as a mission school for African boys known as Bovey Tracey Estate.

1970s

The challenging years
